Añoranzas [yearning/homesickness] [saudade] was composed in 2015 during my residency at the Aspen Music Festival, workshopped at the festival with cellist Binh Park and premiered later by cellist Horacio Contreras at the Latin IS America Festival at Michigan State University. This piece is part of a set of works that deal with the feelings of exile, evolving from nostalgia to bitter grief. In this particular case, longstanding longing for a sense of loss that living far away from your closest and most beloved ones produces, including missing the simple quotidianity with them, or essential life events, and even the moment of death.
